Beginner and Transition Classes

Beginner classes are perfect for new dancers, while Transition classes are designed for those with previous dance experience. Learn the basic rhythms and steps in a fun, welcoming environment that builds confidence one step at a time.

Before Your First Class

Come ready to move, learn, and settle into the rhythm.

Good to know

  • Beginner Class: no dance experience, partner, or special shoes needed!
  • Transition Class (on-going): Previous dance experience and instructor approval required.
  • Wear comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing.
  • Shoes: any slicked-soled shoe (or clogging shoes!)
  • Shoe information is available under "Resources".
  • Bring a water bottle!

Artistic Director, Choreographer, Instructor

Terry Guiffré

Terry was exposed to clogging when she and her two daughters watched as the Bull Run Cloggers performed at the annual Haymarket Day festival in September 1993. A member of the Bull Run Cloggers since December 1994, she has performed with the group at venues ranging from Walt Disney World and Washington, D.C.'s National Independence Day Parade and National Christmas Tree Celebration to a Carnival Cruise ship, America's 250 Royal Block Party for Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, The Great American State Fair in D.C., and countless events throughout the DMV region.

    • Over the years she has served as Artistic Director, Choreographer, and Instructor for the group and as the Coordinator of the Potomac Double Down Clogging Workshop. Drawing from her background as an aerobics instructor, gymnast, and competitive twirler, Terry brings creativity, energy, and a passion for performance to every dance she choreographs. Her previous performance affiliations include the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, Color Guard Captain for the Cardinals Drum and Bugle Corps, and Co-Director and Instructor of the Silvertones Majorette and Drum Corps. She has additionally judged Washington, D.C.'s televised "Dance Fever" competition.

    Terry worked as an Instructional Technology Coach with Prince William County Schools. In 2017, for providing technology and STEAM integration opportunties for students and staff, she led the school to be awarded the FETC National STEM Excellence Award. Since retiring in 2021, she enjoys returning on occasion to coach technology integration to all the wonderfully inquisitive students. When she's not clogging, Terry loves spending time with family and her eight grandchildren, adventuring, and walking one very spoiled pup, Poppy Bella.

    Jan Sutton

    Jan's clogging journey began in 1981 after she moved to Statesville, North Carolina. While visiting the local YMCA, she spotted a sign advertising clogging lessons. The flyer promised "no special shoes required" and "no partner needed," so she decided to give it a try - and quickly fell in love with the dance.

    After marrying in 1982, Jan and her husband relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina. Eager to continue clogging, she joined a local group that met at the YMCA, where she met Bryan Craddock, a member of the Hemlock Bluff Cloggers who also taught weekly classes. Jan joined Bryan's performing group, entertaining audiences at local retirement communities and even performing at the local jail for inmates - Jan experience she still remembers as one of the more unique stops along her clogging journey!

    In 1987, Jan moved to Virginia and once again set out to find a clogging group. She initially danced with a group in Falls Church, but when her husband's job transferred him to Warrenton, the commute became too difficult. Undeterred, Jan continued her search and, in 1998, found the Bull Run Cloggers. After taking lessons with one of the members, she joined the performing group in 1999.

    Over the years, Jan has become an integral part of the Bull Run Cloggers family. She has organized countless celebrations, taught new dancers as a clogging instructor, served on the Board of Directors, and helped strengthen the group's sense of community. Today, in addition to instructing new students, she proudly serves as President, continuing her commitment to preserving and promoting the tradition of Appalachian clogging.
